Home Safes – Why you should have one.
We all have valuables lying around in each room in our homes: keys in the hall way or kitchen, jewelery in the bedroom and bathroom, cash and credit cards in several rooms.
As well as this, there are the personal identity valuables: credit card agreements, bank statements, passports, etc. A thief can buy a few purchases with your cash, but a clever thief could rack up thousands with a stolen identity.
This doesn’t include the items of sentimental value – the items a thief may overlook but a house fire will not.
Are you like me? When I’m on holiday I always put all the valuables in the room safe or safety deposit box and only carry what I need at any time. Yet, when at home I never use a safe. Familiar surroundings offer a false sense of security.
Robbers, thieves, house breakers don’t recognize international boundaries. They operate in all geographical locations. We’ve all have neighbors who have been victims. The wall safe (and its regular use) is effectively an insurance against the unfortunate event that we become victims.
Variety of Home Safes
Wall Safes
Can stand alone as a cabinet safe but intended to be built into a wall thus making it impossible for a thief to grab and run away with. They come in various sizes, thickness of wall, levels of protection (fire, water.) The price range reflects the range of possible features.
Cabinet Safes
A broad term for a wide range of safes which stand alone, although you can have a wall mounted cabinet safe.
Fire Safes
Available to withstand various temperatures for various lengths of time. The housing structure which makes the safe fireproof may waterproof it as well.
Water Proof Safes
A seal on the door prevents damage to the contents in event of the safe being either sprayed or submerged in water or both.
Key Cabinets
Boxes with key or combination locks to hold from one to tens of keys. They are very often wall mountable.
Gun Safes
Various options: wall, cabinet, and wall mountable safes. Different sizes: to hold from an individual pistol to a number of rifles. They can be fire and water proof.
Laptop Safes
Safes specifically designed to hold a laptop.
Diversion Safes
Sometimes called Hidden Safes. They have the appearance of everyday objects, e.g. a book with a hollow center.
A safe is not a luxury or throw away purchase. They are relatively expensive and so some thought should be given to your needs before spending your money. Do you really require water and fire proofing? The larger the safe the higher the cost.
Remember, like home insurance, a safe may seem expensive but if theft, fire, or flooding hit your home you may be glad of the investment.
